The United Kingdom’s Department for Transport has an official branch called the Marine Accident Investigation Branch or MAIB. This office was established in 1989 as a response to the disaster of the Herald of Free Enterprise. This ferry capsized and killed 193 people in March 1987. For any British ship in peacetime, it was regarded as the deadliest maritime disaster since the Iolaire was sunk in 1919. The MAIB can investigate any type of accident in UK waters involving any nationality of ship. It can also investigate any UK registered ship in an accident anywhere in the world.
